The National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI) teamed up with longtime activists this year to revamp Missoula’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration. Slated for Monday, Jan. 18, an entire day of activities is planned.
The First Baptist Church, home of the the Salcido Drop-In Center for the homeless, will host a “Day of Service” from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Community members who have the day off from work or school can participate in service projects to help Missoula’s homeless population. To sign up, call Pastor Curtis Privette at 549-4555 or email mlkmissoula@gmail.com.
Just before his assassination in Memphis, Tenn., King spoke in support of striking sanitation workers: “Our needs are identical with labor’s needs—decent wages, fair working conditions, livable housing, old age security, heath and welfare measures, conditions in which families can grow, have education for their children and respect in the community.” At the rally, Union Executive Officer for UNITE HERE! Local Union 427, Mark Anderlik, will speak and musician Carla Green will perform.
